Information for scholarship students
One of the major reason for visiting NIAS on
a Nordic contact scholarship or Nordic Guest fellowship is normally
to use the specialized collections and information resources of
the library, the largest collections on modern Asian studies in
the Nordic countries. The library also offer special services to
visitors on a sholarship:
What we will do...
Introducing the NIAS Library & Information
Centre
First of all you are introduced to the collections
and the catalogue and we show you how to use them during the visit.
You may borrow as much material as you need while visiting. We also
give a thorough introduction to the online information resources,
such as online or cd-rom databases, electronic journals and internet
resources, some of which can only be used within the library.
Finding the material you need
We also assist you in finding the information
and material you need for your research. More and more material
is available online in fulltext in userfriendly databases, and we
will introduce you to relevant databases in which you can search
during your visit.
We then try to actually obtain for you material
which you need for your research but which you have not been able
to locate previously, or have only learned about from the information
searches performed at NIAS. If you cannot find the material in the
NIAS collections, we try to locate and borrow it from other Danish
libraries.
Other places of interest in Copenhagen
We also try to assist in advice on other library
collections or academic institutions which might hold material of
interest to you here in Copenhagen.
What you can do...
However, finding, ordering and recieving the material
needed can take time, especially if it is not available in the first
library we request it from and we have to try and order the material
anew. The time for the visit is limited, so in order for you
to recieve as much of the material you need as soon as possible,
we ask you to prepare the visit by:
1. Searching the online library catalogue NIASAsiana
to save time from doing it during the visit, but also to familiarize
yourself with the collection and it's contents. For new users there
is a help function. You can list the books you want to use during
your visit and send the list to us before you arrive, and we will
try to make sure they are available for you when you arrive.
2. Exploring the resources of the AsiaPortal. It contains among other things: AsiaInsights which is a free online service providing you with access to the very best Web resources for the study off and news about Asia with a special focus on the Nordic resources; Newsroom which gives you the latest news about Asia; Academic resources which enables you to see a list of the current journals held by NIAS LINC and search for articles in the majority of them; Databases & links which gives you the possibility to search for information in relevant online sources; Newspapers which gives you full text access to many Asian newspapers.
3. One of the major collections on Asian studies
in Denmark belongs to the Royal Library of Denmark. It is accessible
via the Royal Library's online catalogue
REX. Apart from the main catalogue of the Royal Library "Books
and periodicals", REX also gives access to other online catalogues,
including the NIAS Asiana catalogue. It is possible to do a simultaneous
search in these catalogues. Once again, if you make a search in
REX, you can list the material you want us to order for you, and
send the list to us in advance.
4. If you have not done so already, you could
take a look at the online information resources, such as databases
or electronic journals, available in your own university library,
and perform searches in them. If you don't know which databases
to use you can contact us about it. But as each library often has
a unique collection of databases, you should also ask your own library
for advice. You may find relevant material in your searches which
you cannot get from your own library. If so, or if you already have
a list of material you have not been able to find, you can send
the list to us beforehand and we will try to locate it for you.
Get the best out of NIAS!
We would also recommend you to explore the NIAS
homepage for information on e.g. the research staff at NIAS, our
programme of activities and the NIAS network SUPRA - Support Programme
for Asian Studies. If you are registered in the network and return
a signed guareantee from your department, you can borrow books from
our library when you leave. Please contact us if you want a copy
of the form for the guarantee. If you are interested in the SUPRA
network, please contact Nini NIelsen at erik@nias.ku.dk.
If you have further questions you are welcome
to contact us on bib@nias.ku.dk
We are looking forward to seeing you at NIAS!
