Election
6 May 2006:
Singapore's government
has announced snap elections for May 6, one year ahead of the June
2007 schedule. The president has dissolved parliament and set April
27 as Nomination Day, leaving nine days for campaigning. The ruling
People's Action Party (PAP), in power since Singapore gained independence
from Malaysia in 1965, currently holds 82 out of 84 parliamentary
seats. Analysts believe early elections were called to take advantage
of the country's strong economy in order to attract votes.
August 2005:
Singapore: Incumbent
S.R. Nathan was declared President by election officials last week
and will serve a second 6-year term. The decision came 10 days before
the August 27 scheduled presidential ballot. After 3 other would-be
candidates had been disqualified by the Presidential Election Committee,
Nathan was the only candidate listed as of the nomination deadline
of August 17; he became president effective at noon that day.
