Risk Perception in Genetically Modified Crops

In recent years, China has become one of the largest growers of genetically modified (GM) crops in the world. Moreover, the Chinese government is making substantial investments to develop the domestic biotechnology sector. Some western observers fear that the pressures of food security and increased international competition coupled with a weak civil society, might cause the state to disregard the potential socio-economic and environmental risks of GM crops. In this project, the Centre for Development Studies of Groningen University and the Rural Development Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences will join forces in a study on the risk perception of various stakeholders – state institutions, companies, scientists, NGOs and farmers – and determine how this shapes China’s current and future biosafety and risk management policies.

Users' Perspectives With Agricultural Research and Development (UPWARD) is a network of scientists and development specialists working to increase participation by farmers and other users of agricultural technology in research and development. UPWARD seeks to address three important challenges facing agricultural research and development today: linking users and R&D professionals for more effective agricultural innovation; bringing sustained benefits to less favoured farming areas and marginalised groups, especially women; and working with households and local communities as key actors in research and learning activities.

WHO Fact Sheet: Latest facts and figures.

THE DISEASE IN BIRDS. Avian influenza is an infectious disease of birds caused by type A strains of the influenza virus. The disease occurs worldwide. While all birds are thought to be susceptible to infection with avian influenza viruses, many wild bird species carry these viruses with no apparent signs of harm.

Other bird species, including domestic poultry, develop disease when infected with avian influenza viruses. In poultry, the viruses cause two distinctly different forms of disease – one common and mild, the other rare and highly lethal. In the mild form, signs of illness may be expressed only as ruffled feathers, reduced egg production, or mild effects on the respiratory system. Outbreaks can be so mild they escape detection unless regular testing for viruses is in place.

Plotting avian flu scenarios to improve preparedness
Bloom, E.; de Wit, V.; Carangal-San jose, M.J. / Asian Development Bank (ADB) , 2005

This briefing looks at the possible economic consequences for Asia of a mutation of avian flu leading to human-to-human transmission, using different assumptions about the duration and virulence of the flu pandemic. The analysis looks at a relatively mild outbreak, and focuses on the short-run impact of a pandemic on aggregate economic activity. It finds that a pandemic will likely slow or halt economic growth in Asia and lead to a significant reduction in trade, particularly of services. In the long run, potential economic growth will be lower and poverty will increase.
