Asia Insights : Earthquake in Indonesia

An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale (depth 17 kms.) struck at 22.54 GMT (26 May 2006), 05.54 local time (27 May), on the island of Java, Indonesia. The epicentre was on the southern coast approximately 37 kms. south of Yogyakarta. The population of Yogyakartais between 600,000 -800,000 and the affected area is some 500 sq km.

The earthquake-affected provinces are Yogyakarta and Central Java. In Yogyakarta, the earthquake affected all four districts (Sleman, Bantul, Gunung Kidul and Kulon Progo). In Central Java, it affected districts of Magelang, Boyolali, Klaten, and Purworejo. People in the affected areas are living in temporary shelters established nearby their houses, as they are worried about the aftershocks.

Government of Pakistan official site

On October 8, 2005 at 08:52 hours a powerful earthquake struck the northern part of Pakistan causing major destruction and playing havoc with millions of lives. The affected areas were the five districts of North West Frontier Province and four districts of Azad Jammu & Kashmir. More than 70,000 people lost their lives out of those 35,000 were children who were attending schools at that time. Most of the civil society infrastructure such as schools, colleges and hospitals were destroyed and require immediate attention. Administrative boundary of affected maps: *District Map *Tehsil Map

Pakistan turned an important corner in helping earthquake-affected communities when the government officially launched the reconstruction phase titled "Rebuilding Lives," which includes registration for housing reconstruction grants and livelihood cash grants.
