The following links give access to bibliographic databases of interest for anyone searching for information and literature on Asia.

Asia specific

Asia Intelligence Service (AsiaInt)
an online source for current updates on Asian political and economic information. Asia Intelligence Service can be used by visitors in the library.

Bibliography of Asian Studies (BAS)
"referencing western-language monographs, articles and book chapters on all parts of Asia published since 1971". (Please note, since 1992, newly published individual monographs are no longer being added to the database.)

China Academic Journals (CAJ)
A fulltext database for articles from Chinese language journals (1994-) within the areas:
- Literature/History/Philosophy (950.000 articles)
- Economics/Politics/Law (2,4 million articles)
- Education/Social sciences (760.000 articles)

From NIAS you can access directly through the website of Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin: Click on the link "European Access to China Academic Journals Database" to the right under "Online Zugang".
Searches are made in Chinese, but there is a small number of articles which can be found using pinyin.

To view the results you can choose between using pdf-format och the CAJViewer. The CAJViewer programme can be downloaded on the start page of the database. Just click on the link.

Please note: Don't forget to logout when you finish using the database, or other users are blocked from access for 15 minutes!

The Chinese Cultural Revolution Database
This searchable Chinese database contains a large number of documents and consists of 6 sections:

  1. CCP documents and directives
  2. texts by Mao Zedong
  3. speeches, directives and writings by Lin Biao
  4. central party leaders´ speeches
  5. newspaper editorials and signed articles
  6. this section is devoted to the Red Guards
There is a printed index to the database in the library which you will find in the reference section at REF-fe-CHI-05-08.
Please note: The database is only available via one specific pc in the library, please ask the librarians for assistance.

CiiNii - Citation Information by National Institute of Informatics (Nii), Japan.
CiiNii incorporates a number of databases, providing search facilities for academic periodicals published by universities, academic societies etc, with citation links to 900,000 natural science records and full text access to 240.000 of the 9.6 million records in CiiNii .

City University of Hong Kong Theses Online (CityUTO)
provides online access to the abstracts and tables of contents of CityU research postgraduate theses and taught postgraduate dissertations available in the Library, dating back to 1990. Browsing CityUTO: Theses and dissertations covered can be browsed by title, degree and department.

DACHS - Digital Archive for Chinese Studies
is archiving and making accessible Internet resouces relevant for Chinese Studies, with special emphasis given on social and political discourse as reflected by articulations on the Chinese Internet.

Hong Kong University Thesis Online
The Hong Kong University Theses Collection holds 12,475
titles of theses and dissertations submitted for higher degrees to the
University of Hong Kong since 1941. The first recorded thesis was dated 1928, though all theses prior to 1941 were lost during the occupation of WWII. HKUTO includes works in the arts, humanities, education and the social, medical and natural sciences. Many of them deal entirely with or focus on subjects relating to Hong Kong. The collection is primarily in English, with some in English and Chinese, and others in Chinese only.

SARDS 2 is an electronic database containing bibliographic references to South Asia research articles published in journals, collective volumes, conference proceedings, Festschriften, etc. SARDS 2 is a project of the Centre for Research in the Historiography and Intellectual Culture of Kashmir (adwm.indologie.uni-halle.de), hosted by the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg and headed by the Halle Chair in Indology. The focus of SARDS 2 is on the humanities and social sciences. To date, over 56.000 citations are electronically searchable, covering the period from 1786 until 2000.

ELEKTRA - Electronic resources, mainly journals and databases, available through the Royal Library of Denmark.

Ingenta - Combines the UnCover, ingenta and CatchWord databases and offers search and browse fascilities for over 25,000 publications within a wide range of disciplines. Linked to 4,500 electronic full-text articles, together with other articles deliverable by fax or Ariel fax, available for payment.

The following databases do not need a subscription and are available for free over the Internet, i.e. they are not restricted to the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies

ELDIS - Gateway to development information. Includes links to country specific news, maps, statistics, Governmental bodies, Country profile (CIA), IMF country profile, Industrial profile (UNIDO), Trade policy review (WTO), Human rights record (Amnesty), Environmental profile (UNEP), Environmental profile (WRI/World Bank), Advice for visitors well as full text material arranged according to subjects.

World Affairs Online (Internationale Bezeihungen und Ländekunde) - includes material from a wide range of sources on international relations and area studies. International politics, international conflicts, international organisations, international security, defence and domestic security, arms control, national and international economics, foreign policy, national political systems, societal development, environmental policy, structural domestic problems. Both current events and historical reviews are presented.
Articles are selected from about 1,000 international journals, and books, reports and government publications from around the world are also included. About 50% of WAOL's sources are in English, 30% in German, 8% in French and 12% in other languages

U-land.dk - A Danish web portal to information on developing countries and development aid organizations and projects maintained by 30 Danish development aid organizations. It includes e.g. links to Danish and international development aid and human rights organizations, country specific information, educational material, lecturers, travel guides, news etc.
