How
to search for information
hints to help you search more efficiently
basic information skills
Find reliable information
on the web, including full electronic texts using the library catalogue,
search engines, directories and gateways, etc.
Don't forget the LIBRARY!!
Using
the Internet doesn't mean that you don't need the library anymore.
You won't find many books online and the library is the best place
to go for some subjects.
Don't take no for an
answer
If you
assume that what you want is there somewhere, you will be more persistent,
and your question becomes how to phrase your search better so you
can retrieve it. There are always alternate routes to your information;
if searching the web doesn't work, try searching a database, and
vice versa. It may be that your search is too broad or too narrow.
You may not have thought of all the words that could describe your
topic. You may not have thought through how to link the elements
of the topic together. This is where a librarian comes in handy.
If all else
fails ask the librarian!
Better yet,
ask a librarian before you've wasted a lot of time. You can find
