Finding a book or a journal
Books
Use
Asiana
, our online catalogue for literature searches in the library
collection.
By
clicking "About Asiana" you will find information not only about
the monographs and periodicals held by our library but also about
NIAS LINC's bibliographies, Ask the librarian, and other relevant
information about the resources that we provide for our users.
You
of course also have the possibility of just searching our database
by choosing either one of the five following search options or the"Browse
index" function.
"Basic
search" gives you the possibility to search by writing one or more
words on the same line. A fast but a bit primitive way of searching.
"Advanced
search" enables you to combine normal keywords, geographical keywords,
words from the title, authors' names, etc. by combining four different
search lines.
We
advise you to use"Command search" instead, since it's more accurate.
"Command
search" enables you to combine normal keywords, geographical keywords,
words from the title, authors' names, etc. with the Boolean operators
(and, or, not).
For
instance the following search"china and agricultur? and WAR=200?"
will give you a list all the monographs containing the words China
and (agriculture and/or agricultural) as either keyword or title
word published from 2000 onward.
The
books will be displayed with the newest books first.
You
always have the possibility to optimize your search by clicking
the button"Refine".
"Multibase
search" gives you the possibility to search several databases at
one time.
However,
you cannot combine search words, which makes this search imprecise.
The"Browse
index" ought to be used when searching for a specific author, specific
title, etc.
Especially
rather insignificant titles (journal and even book titles often
are) can be found much more easily this way than by a normal search.
Having
found relevant records you also have the option of making a bibliography
by ticking the relevant records and send them to basket by clicking
(Save to basket).
Choose"Basket"
and then e-mail the records to yourself.
If
you're interested in borrowing books you must click each title and
then"Holdings". If available just go to the NIAS library where you
can pick it/them up from the open shelves in the reading room and
then take them to the librarians' desk.
If
lent out you can make a reservation by clicking "Request item" and
then logging yourself in.
If
you don't have a library card, you have to go to the NIAS Library
and fill out a form. Then a library card will be issued to you right
away.
If
you wish to search the NIAS bibliographies you must choose "NIAS
bibliographies".
When
a record in these databases has got the word NIAS at the top is
means that the title is being held by our library.
Searching
and ordering:
Subject classifications in Asiana are only made in English, so please
use English when searching Asiana!
Reservations can only be made on material that is lent out, not
if the material is available on the shelf.
For
assistance on how to search the catalogue please use the help function
on the top of each page.
